1995 Ferrari 348 Spider

I have thoughts.

Today’s 348 is a final year “runout” 1995 Spider which, when new, shared showroom space with the brand new F355, the convertible variant of which wasn’t out yet.

What makes the ‘95 different from the ‘94? Nothing really apart from a smog pump in the engine bay and, if I’m not mistaken, that’s it.

What makes *this* 1995 special? To the untrained eye, maybe nothing, but to this nitpicker: lots.

First and foremost, it was in an accident, so paint meter readings are essential. You want to find out how much was painted and try to determine if the new paint is single stage, like the factory paint, or if it was done with a base and clear.

Next, what’s up with the seats? The seats and the seat belts should be automatic “mouse” belts, but they’re not; and for the life of me I can’t figure out where they are from. They don’t appear to be 1989 (pre automatic) seats, nor European units either. I’m confused. If anyone knows please let me know.

So yeah, this is a strange one!

My thoughts:

  • It’s very odd to see a ‘95 with the “348 Spider” script. There’s debate as to whether all spiders left the factory with these (and were subsequently removed by dealers) or if only early builds got them.
  • Find out about the seats and the paint.
  • Find out what’s under the carbon fiber sill covers. This is a common place for rust!
  • Plan for new tires.
