While the Ferrari 348 is enjoying a long-overdue renaissance in the collector car world, there is one variant that has always stood apart from the rest. It is rare, it is historically significant, and it is the car that fundamentally changed how Ferrari viewed the North American market.
This is the story of the 348 Serie Speciale (SS)—a car born out of necessity, championed by a visionary executive, and executed through a unique collaboration between Italy and New Jersey. It wasn’t just a trim package; it was a statement of intent that saved the reputation of the 348 and created the blueprint for every V8 “special edition” Ferrari that followed.

The Speedline “Challenge” wheels (part number SL886) were available from Speedline through Ferrari and were intended for use on 355 Challenge Series race cars, but have become a popular upgrade to road cars. This is a guide for those wishing to purchase a set.
They say beauty is only skin deep; not with today’s 348. This example from Bring a Trailer is unusual not only in its striking Blu Chiaro paint, but in the fact that its relatively clean interior (especially for the mileage) belies its poorly maintained exterior. Usually I find these things go hand-in-hand. Not today.
Today we present this stunningly specified spider from here in Maryland. Blu Sera over a tan and blue interior might be the best color combo one could expect to see on a 348, and it’s extremely uncommon to boot. Eye-catching without being flashy, I can imagine this color was preferred by those with mature money in 1994
Here we have another white 348; this time a ts, and this time it’s presented by Hagerty Auctions. Somewhere in Illinois our car has a respectable 34K miles and looks fairly clean from I can gleam.
Today I’m sharing this 1992 tb from the Netherlands… or is it in the UK? I’m not clear. No matter, this lovely white slick-roof is listed on Bring A Trailer as a private party listing with just 53K kilometers on the odometer.
Today’s 348 is a really lovely ‘95 Spider brought to us by Bring a Trailer from somewhere in Ohio other than one of their many major cities or Dave Chappelle’s village; nowhere you’ve heard of. Anyway, this Red over ‘not-tan’ (aka black) example has had several owners – 6 – but sports very few miles, just 21,000. That’s low in my book and I do genuinely think this car has good bones. However….
UPDATE 4/2: The selling dealer notes the following regarding the seat color:
“The variation of color you see on the seats is from the Photo Booth. Strobes are used to try and add the proper amount of light in the booth”
I like this car. Not just because it’s a red/tan Spider, like mine. Or because it’s an early car, like mine. Or even because it’s well-photographed. I like it because it’s honest and seems very well-cared-for. And I don’t say that often about dealer-owned cars.
UPDATE 3/8: Seller added new pics of the underside and the right side of car claiming the there is no color mismatch – you decide. Also added clairification as to whatthe edge of the door cards should look like.
Today we have a fairly crisp, low miles, ‘bianco’ targa fit for the iPad generation, but with stories worthy of the Cold War generation; accidents. I’m saying it’s been in an accident.
