1990 Ferrari 348 ts (original owner)

UPDATE 12/9: Added Car Fax from second vin to gallery.

Today’s 348 is a low mileage one-owner ts presented by Bring a Trailer and residing in Chatsworth, California.

Dirty, with pictures befitting a Craigslist Ad and a few niggles that belie its mileage, I think with a little care, and for the right price, this example could become a stunning collectible.

That said, the pictures are poor and there aren’t very many, so it’s possible issues will come to light over the course of the auction which I can’t yet comment on. Nitpicks below!

Prediction: $72,000

Thoughts below the gallery.

VIN: ZFFFG36A7L0087487

My thoughts:

  • Vents are missing on/off indicators. Often indicative of a cheap sticky repair.
  • Wheels are mismatched side to side. Indicative of a lack of attention to detail.
  • Car is very dirty for the mileage.
  • VIN mismatch on the door sticker.
  • Tow hook cover is missing.
  • Seat bottoms well stretched.
  • Fix the driver’s seatbelt tab before it detaches or it gets lost!

What do you make of the mismatched VINs? The seller claims he’s the original owner and didn’t bother detailing the car prior to selling it. He also posted only about 45 pics, but then posted more after some requests. He did sell two previous cars on BaT also with very limited pics. And no service records because his shop doesn’t provide receipts?? It’s a pretty 348 but this one smells a little fishy to me. Thoughts?

It smells strange to me too. See what I just posted on bat re: vin.

If it wasn’t for the VIN I’d think “eccentric owner who didn’t baby the car” but now that I think it through more what’s the point of a one-owner car if there are zero maintenance records?

Seller is going to give the original paperwork after the sale. Huh? Unless this gets resolved satisfactorily, I can’t imagine the seller is going to get a price which meets the reserve. Certainly, I won’t bid. I’ve seen some strange stuff on BaT, but this is near the top.

It certainly would have been smart to sort it out before an online auction; lots of unforced errors here, but as it’s coming together I think what we’re seeing is stubbornness and laziness rather than fraud.
